Last month I was convinced that my business was failing. I was falling behind on projects, I hadn’t signed a new client in almost a month, and I never felt as if there was enough time in the day to get my work done. I was feeling extremely overwhelmed.
So, what was my solution? I worked harder. I skipped lunch. I missed workouts. I worked late into the evenings. And, I even started to work during family time when I could have been playing with my kids and spending time with my wife.
But all of that extra work didn’t make a difference. It actually left me feeling more overwhelmed than ever. And now I wasn’t only failing at my business, I was also starting to compromise my family time and health.
But I’m the pro.
As a coach, I have helped a countless number of clients find balance and success in both life and business, yet here I was struggling at something I was supposed to be a pro at. I wasn’t even using the simple systems, strategies, and tools that I’ve been teaching for years.
I’d like to say that when I realized this I immediately started to use those systems, strategies, and tools and that everything turned around for me, but that’s not the case. Instead, I started to judge and criticize myself. I told myself that if I couldn’t practice what I preached, then I must be a phoney.
Then I got away.
Right around that time I had a business trip to Toronto planned. I wanted to cancel it, assuming that it would be yet another thing to overwhelm me. All I wanted to do was crawl under my desk and hide, but I couldn’t. The trip had to happen. I had no choice but to put my pile of work aside until I returned, even if it meant falling further behind.
And then something special happened during that trip.
I talked to colleagues and friends about the overwhelm I was feeling. Sometimes they offered advice, other times they simply listened, and many of them shared similar stories of overwhelm and feelings of failure.
The more I spoke with them, the more things lightened for me. The pressure I had previously felt to get work done seemed to lift and I was now able to look at my business and life from a new perspective. I started to feel optimistic again and I realized that my business wasn’t failing.
So what changed? What helped me to make my shift in attitude back from the dark side to being optimistic again? I think it can be summed up in one word…
Having a community can help in so many ways. They can help you to see things from new perspectives, offer advice or support, and listen to your victories and challenges. A community is your resource for information, and your sounding board for ideas. They can help you feel as if you have a team behind you.
Building a business can feel lonely and, let’s face, downright scary at times. It’s easy to become overwhelmed.
So if you have a community that you can rely on, great. Lean on them and let them support you when you need them. If you aren’t part of a community that can support you on this crazy journey of building a business, find one.
You can be part of my community.
The experience I describe above had a profound effect on me, both in terms of how overwhelmed I felt, and how amazingly powerful it was to receive the support from my community.
And that’s why I’ve decided to relaunch my Constant Clients Mastermind.
The Constant Clients Mastermind is a community of small business owners just like you. They are looking for the systems, strategies, and tools to build their business, but they also want the support, inspiration, insights, and accountability of a community.
I’ll be launching the Mastermind in the next month, so keep your eyes open for an announcement that will give you details about the monthly group coaching calls, online support forum, free business building course materials, expert interviews, and other awesome resources.
I’ll also be offering my email subscribers early access, bonuses, and reduced pricing. It’s a perk for being part of my community. I love you guys.
So what happened?
Since my trip to Toronto that light feeling has continued. I’ve made some changes as a result of that trip and I’m loving my work, spending lots of time with family, exercising, and I just signed two new clients for my premium one-on-one coatings services.
Life, and work, is good!
